HHS composts all organic waste from the cafeteria. Students help care for the compost bins. We have used this compost to create a school garden and we have sold it at the local farmers' market. With the help of various sports teams and clubs, HHS has increased its composting and recycling activity at lunch. The groups compete to see who can promote the most participation in composting and recycling. Points are deducted for every recyclable item found in the trash. The group with the least points wins a catered lunch donated by the generous Crow Point Pizzeria. Below are schedules for each season.

DANCE TEAM SHATTERS HHS RECORD
The HHS Dance Team recently shattered a famous school record -- one that has nothing to do with dancing but everything to do with school spirit and caring for the environment.
Last month, the dance team recorded the first-ever perfect score in the school's fifth annual "Slash the Trash" competition. The contest pits all of Hingham's fall sports teams against one another in a friendly battle designed to reduce waste in the cafeteria at lunch time. On the day their team is assigned to monitor the trash stations, student-athletes remind their peers about how to properly compost and recycle all of their lunch items. This year, the two-time-defending-champion dancers set a new standard for environmental excellence. In fact, on their day to compete, the dance team kept every single compostable and recyclable item out of the trash.
"The dance team's achievement this year was incredible," said HHS assistant principal Rick Swanson, who coordinates the competition as advisor to the school's environmental club. "On the whole, this past 'Slash the Trash' season was the best we've ever had. Our runners-up, the field hockey team and the girls' soccer team, both came very close to perfection, and the dance team actually got there. It's hard to imagine that twelve-hundred students could pass through a high school cafeteria at lunch time without a single compostable or recyclable item ending up in the garbage dumpster. But that's what happened, and it's a real tribute to the energy and spirit of our Hingham teams. Not only do they know how to compete, but they also know how to make a difference in a way that is really positive and meaningful."
Last week, the dance team was treated to the coveted prize always awarded to the first-place finishers: a team lunch of calzones donated by long-time Green Team sponsors, Crow Point Pizzeria.

Congratulations to the girls' soccer team for a tremendous performance in opening the Slash the Trash season on Wednesday, September 14th. The girls cracked the all-time top-ten with a fantastic score of five. This means that in all three lunches, with more than 1200 students passing through the cafeteria, only five compostable or recylable items were found in the trash. With the 2016 fall season now underway, the bar has been set very high by a team that deserves its reputation for excellence!
